Saturday the 20th October saw Yorky hit the harbour single handed. The wind was forecast to increase to 17 to 18 knots which he expected might be a bit much so he set off early. A southerly hit at 20 knots or so but there was no way he was going to pack up before he set the kite. It was a great ride from Rose Bay to Athol with the boat on the edge as he just kept above Shark Island. Top speed was 16.7 knots which he thinks is a good mark for single handed in a VX One.

Twilight
In the twilight of 15th of October Yorky with Mark Langford and Will Ryan onboard ripped down the Harbour in a 20 knot Noreaster. Will & Mark knew the VX was fast but could not believe that she accelerated so fast when we popped the kite.
Demonstration Weekend at Woollahra Sailing Club 6 & 7 October
Yorky took 12 people out for a sail from Woollahra Sailing Club on the weekend. Saturday was miserable and cold and Phil Tomkins who is buying a VX One spent a couple of hours out with Jason Neuhaus. They had some good rides when the breeze was gusting to 16 knots. Craig Young came out for half an hour or so with his 5 year old son James and enjoyed the lighter breeze. Yorky took a few pictures from the rubber duck. See the Gallery On Sunday John Hurley & Dario Valenza were first out of the blocks to enjoy the breeze that peaked at about 18 knots for the first trip. Phil Barnett brought his son Daniel along and they came out with Pete Davies. The breeze was up around 20 knots and we hit 18 knots with Daniel on the helm with a huge grin on his face. Steve McConaghy came down with Narelle and we went out with Rob Douglass. Yorky took the malfunctioning remote control off his GoPro and finally got some footage for the day. The breeze was gusting to 25 knots and we got an awesome ride with the bow lifting a metre out of the water at times. We started a couple of hundred metres off the club and doused the kite in Chowder Bay 7 minutes later. Our top speed was 19.7 knots. Check out the video.
2012 Heaven Can Wait One Lap Dash
The 2012 Heaven Can Wait One Lap Dash was sailed on Lake Macquarie in 15 to 25knots from the west with holes of less than 10 knots and gusts of over 30 knots . Most of the Kite Boards rigged big kites expecting the 17 to 19 knots that was forecast. None made it around the track. The race was started off Toronto on the western shore. Two got blown over to Belmont on the eastern shore. One of them got a mote to take him back to the club, the other caught a taxi. A third made it further around but got a rescue boat to pick him up.
Yorky, Matt Craig and his 13 year old daughter sailed Yorky’s VX One, Tachyon to a resounding win in Division 2 and were second overall behind Shane Guanaria in his 505.
“We started about halfway down the line, further than most. We saw Shane Guanaria’s505 pop out from the rest of the boats at the committee boat about 100metres above us. After about 5 minutes of sailing I looked around and was amazed to see that the rest of the fleet was over 300 metres behind! That fleet included a Farr40, Melges32, the 8m sportsboat Stealthy and many other boats much bigger than us.”
After we rounded Coal Point point and headed upwind to the first mark the bigger boat behind started to reel us in (we reach and run like a much bigger boat in breeze but upwind we are what we are, a 19 foot, 5.8metre long boat) We rounded the mark behind the moths and Shane’s 505. When we laid her over out of a gybe Stealthy got past us. They had their share of troubles too and more than half way around we overtook them briefly.
There was a decent upwind leg up past Pulbar Island around the 10 mile mark. With the wind gusting into the 30s we did a fair bit of this with the jib furled. Three 40 footers got past us here. The Melges32, Breezin sailed closer to the top of the island than us. When we cracked our sheets and cracked off we reached across their bow sailing a few knots faster. It took them another 10 miles before they caught us again.
We set a kite in 10 knots after rounding the southern most mark but only had it up for a couple of minutes as the breeze built to 25knots and we could not make it around a point.
We ran down to the mark in Crangan Bay and rounded right on the tail of Quest and gybed just inside Stealthy. The next 10 miles were a tight lead and the bigger boats opened up in front and closed in from behind with the breeze still gusting into the 30 knot range.
When we were on the breeze after the Belmont mark the Melges 32 got past us and opened up a 300 metre lead by the time we got to the Speers Point mark. In the next mile on the two sail reach to Pendlebury Park we ran them down to be just inside them at the point.
In the last little beat they got away from us but the hard reaching course certainly suited the VX One and we beat all the other sportsboats on handicap (most of them across the line too).We were second overall on handicap to Shane in his 505. Shane capsized 4 times including a pitch pole and all the sportsboats had heaps more problems than us, including broken rigs. We only laid Tachyon over once. As with our first time out in 30 plus knots the VX One came back in perfect condition. The only problem we had was a screw broke on my Windex mount.
